Maritime2020 and LNG Asia Summits

29 November 2018

Wisdom Events has reported that LNG and Maritime Professionals "found common ground" at two summits which took place in Singapore this week.

New emission regulations for marine fuel are motivating the maritime industry to convert shipping vessels to LNG fuel, making these two sectors interlinked. On 27 November, many of key LNG & maritime professionals gathered under one roof at the award-winning Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel for the joint Maritime2020 and LNG Asia Summits. It provided an unparalleled platform for leaders to discuss common subjects, strengthen the cooperation between the shipping and LNG industries and discover how to drive better profitability in both sectors.

The Wisdom Events organised double event started off with a presentation from Mathieu Girardin, CEO of CMA CGM in Asia about the impact of upcoming IMO regulations and how LNG could help shipowners comply. Intertanko’s Elfian Harun delved deeper to provide an update from MEPC 73 and an overview of the next steps for IMO, warning that the industry should be prepared to make changes to the way their vessels are managed and operated.

During the Maritime session, chaired by Maite Klarup, General Manager South East Asia for BIMCO, speakers reviewed the future of the industry in the panel discussion. Individual presentations also provided valuable insights with Teekay’s Matthew Blake covering digitalisation and use of big data, Michael Lochinvar Abundo from Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore talking about sustainability and electrification efforts, Scott Mahoney of MagneGas presenting green energy solutions and Okan Duru of the Nanyang Technological University revealing how algorithmic trading could be used in shipping asset management.

The LNG session, led by LNG Summit Chairwoman Vandana Hari, Founder & CEO of Vanda Insights, gave a chance to discover the latest LNG market trends and the progress of LNG infrastructure development with the focus on transportation and storage during panel discussions. Also, an in-depth analysis of the evolution of the Japanese gas market was given by Hiroaki Fujimoto of JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation with Tom Smeenk of Vopak LNG sharing developments of its LNG receiving terminal.

The conference drew to a close with a joint LNG & maritime session that had Simon Neo of the International Bunker Industry Association explaining the implication and challenges for 2020 on bunkers and a panel discussion on the future of technology in maritime.

The highlight of the event was the prestigious LNG & Maritime Asia Awards ceremony that recognised the most outstanding achievements of both industries. Among peer-selected winners were CMA CGM (Most Accomplished Ship Owner in the Asia Pacific), ENI Trading and Shipping (Fuel Efficiency Award), MagneGas (Most Substantial Service Provider), Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (The Most Extraordinary Contribution To HSSE), Singapore LNG Corporation (Asia Pacific LNG Innovation Award) and JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy (LNG Supplier of the Year).

The event was supported by Gold Sponsors JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation and Diamond Gas International, Silver Sponsors Creon Capital and Singapore LNG Corporation, as well as Bronze Sponsors CMA CGM, C-Leanship and Teekay, in partnership with Singapore Shipping Association (SSA).
